 The uses…

Oh the many ways to use my skin food! It started with a few intentions. One was to use more of the cow we butchered for our food. Another was to up my self-reliant, bougie prepper game. Another was to remove toxins from my life. It didn’t take long to go beyond the removal of toxins and became how to nourish, heal, reinforce, and take ownership of health and healing all around my home. And a vision came to me…to have one thing that meets the needs of all these different directions. Keep it simple. Keep it real. Keep it honest. My skin food is what it says it is. Food for the skin. And since food is medicine, food for the skin is also medicine for the skin.

So I began playing around in the kitchen. I tried MANY tallow making procedures and have had many batches of mediocrity or failure. I learned from that and took a risk on a hunch to create a tallow making procedure that is simpler and smells way better. I ruined batches of herb oils and learned that you can’t process all herbs the same…I learned to listen to the needs of what is in front of me to get the outcome I desire. Those early years were punchy to say the least but it was worth it to get where it is now. The first few batches were just face moisturizer and body butter. And it has grown from there.

Both I, and my beautiful skin food clients keep trying skin food on new applications and situations. The list keeps growing…so if you find yourself using it for something other than what’s on this list, let me know and I’ll add you to it! Until then, here are some of the known uses:

  • face moisturizer

  • body butter

  • cracked man hands

  • dry summer or winter skin

  • slag burns

  • cuts and scrapes

  • incision sites

How will you use it?

*legal disclosure: this product is made in a home kitchen from materials made in a home kitchen

The making of skin food comes from a couple of places. One is from the natural world around me that I bring home and create in my kitchen. The other is from outside sources that I don’t have the ability to make myself. In other words, some ingredients are kitchen witched by me, and others are intentionally sourced from places I feel match some or all of my core integrities. Below I share the ingredients in a non-typical salesy way. Thing is…we live in an information age, so if you want to know more about an individual ingredient, you can find hundreds of articles for and against anything and everything. I hold the space of rewilding wholeness and free-range humaning…which means I ask all of us to learn a little, and make choices based on the wisdom of our body. I believe our body is a healing tool…it is where our spiritual wisdom speaks to us…so you are either a yes or no for my offerings. And, by all means, research more if you need to and then come back and order if you are aligned.

The hoof…

Beef tallow. Grass-fed, lived well & loved.

My beloved Juniper, meeting the cows my folks raise for the first time. She was unsure and I think they knew it and enjoyed the upper hand of the stare-off. This is where the fat comes from.

Did you know that the body uses cholesterol to convert sunlight into vitamin D? Tallow is rich with cholesterol…do you see what I’m getting at? My skin food helps our bodies make vitamin D! This summer I have never been so dark from being out in the sun daily and I didn’t burn once. I use my body for what it’s designed for…how ‘bout you?

The leaf…

Not only do I collect the pollen, I collect the needles too. I walk around the park or the woods collecting like a mad woman since the pollen season is so short. This summer, a man walked by me and asked with a twisted “WTF” face, “what are you doing?”

I replied, “collecting pine pollen and needles.”

He seemed shocked and after a few breaths, asked “why?”

I kept working as I replied, “because it is medicine…there is medicine all around us.”

“What do you treat with it?” he asked as if I was full of shit.

“For starters, boosting the immune system. For healing lungs. For boosting energy and resilience in women and boosting testosterone in men…and what modern man doesn’t need that!?”

He giggled before going on. “How do you know this?”

“I listen to the energy of the plant as I gather it. I observe the qualities and characteristics of the plant to understand what it is capable of supporting. I listen and analyze my body as it reacts to it to know how it works, what it’s doing in my body, what the outcomes are, and if it needs more or less.”

He walked away, muttering loudly “I’ve never seen anything like this…have a good day.”

Pine

You can check out some of my past substacks for my love of yarrow. I have had so much healing from this beauty. From the energetic, spiritual, emotional, AND physical. And I have found the yarrow in North Idaho, being the same wild creature it is other places I’ve harvested it for medicine, is so different than anywhere else I’ve used it.

North Idaho yarros is such a SHE. She is elder. She is queen priestess. She is the strongest, most wise, and most delicious up here. Way less bitter than the wild Yarrow in other places. Way more clear in her voice and reasons. Way more potent…a little goes a long way with her.

My beloved Juniper loved yarrow and I’m glad I got at least one summer of yarrow gathering with her. She would get into a patch, stop, close her eyes, lift her precious face, and breath deep the yarrow tops. My body has ached not having her with me this year…I would collect and cry and laugh and remember and rage that she left me so suddenly…so I find comfort in our love of yarrow together…I let her spirit gather with me since it feels so wrong to not have her next to me.

I often say “what can’t yarrow do?” And I mean it. For the last 3 years I keep finding things it is good for. I really think that yarrow and pine can do the majority of self-reliant health care, and together, they kind of give me mother-father vibes. Together they honor both and take care of all.

Yarrow, yarrow, YARROW!!

Pine and yarrow are infused into cold-pressed sunflower oil from a family run farm. I sing as I make and then solar-infuse for 3 days.

The outsourced…

As a bougie prepper, I try to keep ingredients within my making-control. And where that isn’t possible, I hunt down sources I align with to feel good about using. Also, I’ve reformulated my skin food to simplify what’s in it so I can keep what is outsourced to a minimum.

The things you might want to know…

I don’t ship in summertime. Buy in late fall, and stock up in early spring.

If your skin food comes to you a bit melt-y…just give it a light stir, a gentle pounding on the counter, and stick it in the fridge for 10 or 20 minutes. Take it out and set it where you want to keep it.

I don’t use purifying chemicals or preservatives. The natural ingredients are all we need. There is an slight animal smell. (hello…the cows?!?!?!) One of the many poisons of modernity is that it has become easy to dull our senses with the removal of the animal nature and the lands it lives on. My skin food is an invitation to rewild your senses and trust your animal connection. I truly believe one of the reasons skin food is so effective is because of the animal in it…it’s like the animal of our human design knows what to do with what it’s being given. So, yeah…no perfumey smell here. If you have become overly domesticated, this will be a great opportunity for you to awaken something wild and wonderful within. That being said…I’ve taken great lengths to find a process of making tallow that has the least amount of animal smell…some say they can’t even smell it…and it’s okay if you do, or don’t!

I can do custom mondo jars in the 9oz size. Email nissa@freerangehumaning.com if you want this.

You can customize my skin food for your needs. You can add some essential oils and stir right in.

If you have an acute skin issue or injury or pain, you can take a dollop out of the jar and add in extra healing helpers like dragons blood powder, pearl powder, essential oils for pain, etc.

Remember, our skin is our largest organ…keeping it healthy and happy and capable is a huge portion of our healthcare.

I don’t like to waste things, so some labels will have hand-written changes to the ingredients list.

Batches may vary. Beef fat that becomes tallow can be different in each animal and since I don’t use deodorizers or unnatural agents, there is no way to have a tallow that doesn’t have a slight animal smell that is unique to that animal I used.

I think that is is for now. Return to the top of this page to order.
